Colonial Colony and Village Green were developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s by Klingshirn Builders of Huron. In late 1964, the construction company, which was building many of the houses in Beachwood Cove, announced plans to develop a housing and apartment complex called Colonial Colony with an investment of more than $2,270,000. Work on the 30-acre site began in early 1965. Construction was spread over three years and when completed included 60 houses and 12 one and two story apartment complexes.

Colonial Colony was so successful that Klingshirn Builders bought the land adjacent to the new high school and developed the neighborhood of Village Green. The first home broke ground there in 1967. There were 9 acres of public space centrally located in neighborhood.
